MENTHOL has a long history of use with an impressive resume. It works as an antibacterial agent, cryotherapeutic pain reliever, antipruritic (pruritis = itching), and as a food additive to make things taste minty fresh.
(It’s also used to make cigarettes more addictive – by the same mechanism that makes it so good at pain relief – but we’ll leave that one alone.)
Cryotherapy agents like menthol trigger cold-sensitive thermoreceptors in the skin, which in turn activate the spinothalamic tract – basically using the sensation of cold to tell the brain to chill out (ha!) on pain.
