What is CBG?

Cannabigerol (CBG) is a cannabinoid that seems to operate as a precursor to other cannabinoids. The acidic form of CBG (CBGa) is abundant in young cannabis plants. Over time, it breaks down into CBD and THC. 

This has led many to call CBG the “mother of all cannabinoids.” While CBG breaks down into other cannabinoids you may already know and love, it’s unique and has its own effects.

Is CBG Psychoactive?

This is a common question without a simple answer. Technically, yes, CBG is psychoactive – but likely not in the way you think. “Psychoactive” is a term that only means “affecting the mind. Considering this, everything from coffee to heroin is “psychoactive.” 

What many people mean when they ask this is whether or not it is intoxicating. In this regard, the answer is a firm no. CBG, like CBD, does not result in an alteration in consciousness and is not inebriating. 

Since CBG (as well as CBD, CBN, and other minor cannabinoids) does affect the mind it is psychoactive though. Not only that, this fact is what makes it useful in the first place.

What is CBG Good For?

CBG benefits vary greatly and have not gone through much research, unfortunately. CBG binds to both the CB1 and CB2 receptors but does not activate them. This is a different mechanism of action than that of CBD and THC but CBG cannabinoid benefits seem to be similar to that of CBD.

Anecdotal evidence states that, when they use CBG, anxiety management is a major use case. The research on this is still lacking but it makes up a major amount of the people who use CBG,

• Inflammation – A rodent study found CBG to assist in inflammatory bowel disease. This is a tremendous result for anyone with inflammation-related bowel conditions but it may also apply to inflammation as a whole. 

• Certain Infections – CBG as well as several other cannabinoids may assist in certain antibacterial scenarios.

• Appetite Stimulation – One study found that CBG acts as an appetite stimulant distinctly from THC. This means they are unsure about why it does this but they have a good amount of evidence that it does.

CBG Cannabinoid Effects

The true power of CBG lies in its unique mechanism of action. We’ve talked at length about the endocannabinoid system previously. A big part of this system is the cannabinoids that we produce naturally within ourselves (Endocannabinoids.)

One of the main endocannabinoids we produce is Anandamine – also known as “the bliss molecule.” One of the common ways that we increase the production of anandamide naturally is through physical exercise. This is actually the same chemical that produces the “runner’s high” people talk about.

Another way to strengthen anandamide production is by inhibiting the chemical that breaks it down. FHH is the compound that naturally breaks down anandamide and research has shown CBG to inhibit it. It seems to do so while activating the creation of more anandamide as well.
